Happy Holidays from MLK Labor

From all of us at MLK Labor, we wish you a happy holiday season and a New Years. We are reflecting on the past year and looking forward to a 2019 filled with progress. We also thank all those working during the holidays to keep us healthy, safe, and well.

EMT Strike Update

Yesterday, AMR and Teamsters Local 763 returned to the bargaining table which averted (for now) a strike that was set to begin at noon today. MLK Labor has sanctioned this strike and was ready to offer whatever support is needed to these workers.

Seattle EMTs have been bargaining since last January and voted 310-46 to authorize a strike against AMR after the company walked away from the bargaining table. EMTs provide critical, life-saving services to our community. We stand with our EMTs. We’ll keep you updated as the situation develops.

Save The Date: SUMMER IN FEBRUARY, 2/23

The date is set for our spring fundraiser. This year it’s going to be Labor Prom style with the theme “Summer in February.” Stay tuned for more details…

MLK Labor is Looking For a Parliamentarian and Ombudsperson

Under new bylaws changes approved in October, we are adding an ombud and parliamentarian to serve our council. We’ve extended the deadline through the end of the year for these positions to allow for more applicants. See below for how to apply for each of the positions. You can read about each of these positions in our bylaws here.

Ombud: This person will resolve complaints regarding conduct violations of the AFL-CIO Anti-Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Policy. We are looking for someone with a strong moral compass who is comfortable handling confidential and troublesome information. Preference will be given to Union members and MLK Labor Delegates.

Parliamentarian: This person will advise delegates and officers on rules of procedure when called upon during meetings and when such advice is required. Requirements are someone who understands Robert’s Rules of Order and parliamentary procedures, is familiar with the labor movement, available the third Wednesday of each month, and is comfortable navigating tough dialogue. Preference will be given to Union members and MLK Labor Delegates.
