Resolution for MLK to support the Protect America’s Workers Act
January 21, 2026
WHEREAS, the Protect America’s Workers Act (PAWA) is legislation to restore federal workers’ freedom to join a union. It would counter what AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler describes as the largest act of union-busting in American history. Trump executive orders beginning in March 2025 canceled the union contracts of nearly half a million federal workers at agencies like the departments of Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
WHEREAS, the Trump Administration continues to make threats, denying federal workers our right to free speech and assembly. Decimating union rights is part of a larger attack on the federal workforce that has left services for veterans, senior citizens, and kids in turmoil. If this attack on the public sector is allowed to stand, the private sector is next.
WHEREAS, PAWA would restore collective bargaining rights. It would affirm that the vast majority of Americans support public service and the right to join together to improve our conditions.
WHEREAS, on December 11, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives passed PAWA by a vote of 231‑195, with 20 Republicans joining all Democrats in support. The bill is now pending in the Senate as S. 2837.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that MLK Labor encourages union members and supporters to thank House lawmakers who stood with federal employees and to urge Senators to join them.
