Seattle Labor Movement Commemorates May Day
May 8, 2026
Seattle’s labor movement turned out on May Day or International Workers’ Day, joining a nationwide day of action to defend workers’ rights and demand an end to the Trump administration’s unjust immigration crackdown. Thousands gathered at Cal Anderson Park for a rally before marching through Capitol Hill and South Lake Union.
Speakers shared stories of workplace exploitation, unlawful ICE arrests, and the growing threats facing immigrant workers. The rally highlighted the deep ties between the labor and immigrant‑rights movements. Maximo Londonio, a green‑card holder who was detained for nearly two months, spoke about the fear and isolation of detention and the power of solidarity that helped win his release. Washington State Labor Council President April Sims urged attendees to stay united against billionaires and those seeking to exploit divisions within the working class.
Following the rally, the crowd marched behind a banner declaring “Workers, migrants & immigrants unite,” and concluded with a community fair at South Lake Union Park.
