Labor of Love Awardee

Filipino Community Center of Seattle | Seattle, WA

Founded in 1935 as a social organization, the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) has evolved into a not-for-profit social service charitable organization serving the Filipino and other communities in Greater Seattle and beyond.

FCS is producing a four-part mural on the front of the Filipino Community Senior Housing Apartments in Seattle. The mural depicts the history of Filipinos from the vision of Filipino writer/poet/labor organizer Carlos Bulosan and his poem, “We Want the Wide American Earth.”  The history in this mural begins in the Philippines and the struggle for liberation from Spanish colonialism and US imperialism and proceeds to tell the history of Filipino immigrants in the US and their struggle to find their rightful place in US society as working people.

The mural will be unveiled in May 2021. You can learn more about their work at https://filcommsea.org/
