Medical Assistant – HEADACHE CLINIC (TEMPORARY, DAYS)

This individual will assist healthcare professionals in the delivery of high quality patient care.  This is a fast paced and high volume academic, research and patient care setting which requires a strong emphasis on accuracy, collaboration, teamwork, and problem solving abilities. Must possess availability to work any day during work week Monday through Friday.

MONITOR FLOW IN THE CLINIC

  • Prepares paperwork and medical records for clinic visit according to clinic protocol.
  • Reviews daily schedule to identify visits that may require special preparation, i.e. supplies, equipment, etc.
  • Before each session, prints copies of individual provider schedules and delivers to providers according to clinic protocol.
  • Completes and posts exam room and MA / provider assignments at the beginning of each clinic session.
  • Opens and prepares exam rooms for patient care assuring that the rooms are clean and organized between patients.PATIENT CARE
  • Accurately obtains and documents patient’s chief complaint, height, weight, pain assessment, fall assessment, review medications, review allergies and vital signs, etc. in the
    medical record per clinic protocol.
  • Properly identifies patients prior to procedures, injections, or collection of specimens.
  • Obtains information, presents questionnaires, etc., as required per clinic protocols.
  • Implements clinic guidelines as appropriate for patient condition.
  • Recognizes symptoms of urgent problems or unstable conditions and reports immediately to RN and / or provider.
  • Alerts providers to arrival of scheduled patients as required by clinic guidelines.
  • Performs procedures, administers tests, etc. as ordered by provider.   Notifies RN of orders that cannot be implemented by MAs.
  • Informs provider of results of clinic-administered tests.
  • Records all medications, immunizations, injections, or clinic administered tests performed by the MA on the appropriate form in the medical record.
  • Participates in clinic specific procedures related to test follow-up and patient notification.
  • Accurately documents patient care in the medical record (paper or electronic) according to clinic guidelines.MONITOR PATIENT FLOW
  • Monitors patient flow throughout the clinic to assure efficient clinic operations.
  • Anticipates arrival of scheduled patients and completes intake tasks promptly.
  • Monitors room lights, flags or other signals for indications of necessary patient care.
  • Assists other MAs as needed.PATIENT DISCHARGE
  • Notifies RN staff and / or clinic manager of patients requiring emergency procedures or transfers.
  • Schedules new and return appointments, consultations and procedures including ancillary appointments or procedures.
  • Provides patients with appropriate discharge instructions, patient education handouts, and home test kits as ordered.
  • Documents accordingly.
  • Follows other clinic specific discharge procedures.
  • Checks completeness of requisitions and verifies to ensure accuracy.DELIVERS SAFE AND THERAPEUTIC CARE
  • Accurately measures and documents Orthostatic blood pressure.
  • Oxygen administration.
  • 12-lead electrocardiogram including rhythm strips.
  • Application of medical immobilization or patient protective devices.
  • Cleaning of patient care equipment per clinic guidelines.
  • Collection of lab specimens including urine, sputum, blood, etc.
  • Assisting providers with medication prescription requests including phoning or faxing prescriptions.
  • Performs venipuncture, administers skin tests if allowed by clinic protocol.MAINTAINS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT
  • Orders medical supplies, forms and clerical supplies as needed (includes stock and non-stock).
  • Maintains appearance and cleanliness of the patient care areas.
  • Stocks examination rooms with supplies and education materials, maintaining established PAR levels as specified by clinic protocol.
  • Promptly removes outdated supplies and medications. Checks regularly for outdates according to clinic protocol.
  • Requests housekeeping and maintenance services as needed.JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
  • Orients new health care providers and staff to the physical setting, equipment and general policies and procedures within the clinic.
  • Responds to fire and other disasters according to established protocol.
  • Performs quality assurance activities in the clinic as delegated.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in use of scheduling and electronic medical record systems.
  • Maintain knowledge of Hospital and Ambulatory care department and clinic policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings in person and/or actively seek to keep informed of information/idea sharing.
  • Maintain infection control standards including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective attire.
  • Responsible to maintain TB/flu vaccine/respiratory mask fit.
  • Maintains, completes and submits required 8S Clinic reports and audits in a timely manner.
  • Complete annual competencies.
  • Participate in development of new policies involving MA practice and clinic processes.
  • Perform related duties as required.
