The Community Specialist provides a Social Services team presence during evening hours and works within a collaborative building team in order to respond to the urgent psychosocial concerns of tenants impacted by mental health, substance use, and physical disability. This position proactively works in the milieu to create a sense of community in a building during lower-staffed hours and supports housing stability for vulnerable tenants needing socialization and support.



Supportive and Community Services

  • Create respectful and trusting relationships with tenants.
  • Provide an active and assertive engagement presence in the building during evening hours to support tenants experiencing anxiety, frustration, or crisis.
  • Use approved de-escalation techniques provided by Plymouth training in responding to angry or upset tenants or guests.
  • Help manage the milieu to promote safety and community by maintaining a proactive presence and build relationships with tenants.
  • Document engagements and consult with respective Housing Case Manager (HCM) for continued strategies to support tenants.
  • Coordinate with Designated Community Responders and Seattle Police Department as needed.
  • Identify community building activities that are of interest with the tenants – social activities, health, educational opportunities, etc., and establish calendar of community activities in collaboration with HCMs. Plan, coordinate or facilitate activities and actively encourage tenants to participate.
  • Assist HCMs in completing documentation (Special Reviews, Byrd Barr applications, annual Housing Services Plans, etc.).
  • Support Building Team as needed in various capacities such as arranging for transportation for tenants, driving groups of tenants to grocery stores or food banks, and participating in apartment moves (packing/cleaning/transport).



  • Work collaboratively with all Plymouth departments to uphold the agency mission.
  • Participate in regular meetings with social services and building management team members to collaboratively increase stability and retention of tenants.
  • Provide back-up to building team as needed.
  • Participate in Plymouth committees and workgroups as appropriate.



  • Promote a trusting tenant/staff relationship wherein tenants are encouraged to provide honest feedback regarding the service.



  • Attend an initial on-boarding and subsequent training sessions throughout employment.
  • Manage time and prioritize duties to provide necessary services to tenants.
  • Maintain service records, documenting interventions and engagements.
  • Complete other records and reports appropriate to the position as directed by the Program Manager.
  • Assist and support tenants with annual Tenant Satisfaction Survey process.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled supervision and team meetings to discuss tenant issues and general program issues and goals.  Attends other meetings and in-service trainings as requested.


 Administrative (cont.)

  • Follow program and agency policies and procedures.  Provides input to program policies, procedures and goals, as requested.
  • Read materials as requested.



  • Fulfill other duties as directed by the Program Manager.
