Resolution Saying No to ICE
January 21, 2026
WHEREAS, Donald Trump is one year into his second term in office, and Project 2025 is in full effect: domestic and foreign attacks are an affront to all working people to strip us of our human rights and to make the billionaire class even richer;
WHEREAS, the MLK Labor community is outraged to hear Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) publicly murdered Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026 and shot Luis David Nino-Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras in Portland, Oregon on January 8, 2026;
WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO wrote in a press release, “When the Trump administration deports immigrants to inhumane prisons abroad, tries to strip people of their citizenship or other work permits, conducts raids at our worksites, and shoots innocent people who are exercising their constitutionally protected right to peacefully protest, they are targeting workers—many of whom are union members. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”
WHEREAS, Bernie Burnham, the first Asian American Pacific Islander and person of color elected President of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, wrote in a press release: “As a Labor Movement, the first amendment is essential to our mission of bringing economic and social justice to our workplaces, community, state, and nation. Left unchecked, today’s actions pose a dire threat to our precious freedoms.”
WHEREAS, Enrique Fernández, UNITE HERE Vice President for Immigration, Civil Rights and Diversity, wrote in a press release from January 8, 2026, “This murder is just the latest example of an agency, and an immigration enforcement apparatus in general, that is completely out of control. Even just this morning, UNITE HERE members who work at the Minneapolis Airport have been detained by ICE when they showed up to work, despite having work authorizations and valid badges from the TSA.”
WHEREAS, escalating ICE enforcement has in the Twin Cities, prompting union-led actions, including a No Work, No School, No Shopping action on Friday, January 23, 2026; and state affiliates such as the Washington Education Association have adopted resolutions in support of this action;
WHEREAS, MLK Labor has previously passed resolutions as we build our movement to resist, organize, and fight the federal government’s harmful attacks, including a resolution on labor supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a resolution in support of Mahmoud Khalil, and multiple resolutions in solidarity with federal workers;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, MLK Labor joins the AFL-CIO and the wider labor community in “demanding that ICE immediately stop these dangerous operations and leave our communities and workplaces before even more innocent people are hurt or killed.”
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the King County labor community stand in solidarity with the Minneapolis labor community organizing, resisting, and fighting including Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1005, SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, CWA Local 7250, St. Paul Federation of Educators Local 28, and UFCW 663 and does endorse the ‘No Work, No School, No Shopping’ action on Friday, January 23, 2026.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, MLK Labor reaffirms its commitment to extend solidarity to all immigrant workers in the face of Trump’s anti-immigrant policies through the strategy outlined in the resolution passed at the October 16, 2025, meeting.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that MLK Labor Council leaders will confer with the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation to offer support and to learn from the experiences in the Twin-Cities region in order to better prepare King County workers and their unions for an escalation of ICE activities in our region.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that MLK Labor Council calls on all other labor unions to denounce these acts of terror in our communities, and to stand with all immigrants, who are vital members of the working class, our communities, and our labor unions.
