Resolution on Strengthening Solidarity with Immigrant Workers

WHEREAS, one of the very first acts of the Trump Administration upon claiming office in January 2025 was to begin an outright attack on immigrant workers; Trump passed 34 executive orders on immigration that put millions of workers at risk; and, 

WHEREAS, the daily quota for arrests of immigrants has increased to 3,000 people per day as of July 2025, and ICE has reported over 56,000 in detention, over 70% of whom have no criminal convictions; the Trump administration has escalated ICE raids on sanctuary cities in recent weeks as of October 2025, including threats on Washington State in which immigrant workers face the severity of these attacks, such as the Bear Gulch Firefighters, Mount Baker Roofing workers in Whatcom County and Eagle Beverage workers in Kent, WA; and,

WHEREAS, the labor movement has unequivocally supported the rights of immigrants and union members facing scrutiny, violence, and potential deportation by the Trump administration;

WHEREAS, MLK Labor has led us to fight back in many ways since the start of Trump’s second term in January 2025, including centering organized labor in the May Day and Labor Day actions, hosting Immigrant Know Your Rights trainings, and organizing TPS (Temporary Protected Status) Alliance meetings;

WHEREAS, the labor movement has worked together with the community to support and win the release of union members detained at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, WA, including SEIU member Llewelyn Dixon, IAM member Max Londonio, and IATSE member Fernando Rocha;

WHEREAS, the repeated reports from the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) detailing human rights abuses including medical neglect, retaliation against hunger strikers, wage theft, and denial of due process and recognizing the commitment of the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, in Resolution #2025.22 to “defend the rights and dignity of all immigrant workers and their families”, “unequivocally opposes the criminalization and detention of immigrants, and calls for a humane, just, and efficient immigration system”; and further acknowledging the importance of working in solidarity with immigrant rights organizations to eliminate for-profit detention centers nationwide, including the NWDC, in alignment with RCW 70.395; 

WHEREAS, AFL-CIO constituency groups including APALA, APRI, CBTU, CLUW, LCLAA, and Pride at Work were created to build a more inclusive, equitable, and united labor movement by addressing challenges workers from diverse backgrounds face by centering voices of historically marginalized workers including women, immigrants, LGBTQ+ workers, and communities of color are represented, included in decision-making spaces, being the bridge between community organizations and labor, and uplifting voices of immigrant and undocumented workers by demanding immigration reform from its inception and strengthen true labor solidarity reaching beyond our borders in international solidarity with all workers; and, 

WHEREAS, the continued collaboration between organized Labor and community is crucial to aid immigrant workers, asylum seekers, refugees, and other migrant workers in distress; and,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that MLK Labor commits to extending solidarity to all immigrant workers in the face of Trump’s anti-immigrant policies through building a strategy for immigrant rights work in coordination with the AFL-CIO constituency groups, including identifying organizations to partner with, campaigns to work on, and organizations to receive funding;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that MLK Labor celebrate the victory of Llewelyn Dixon, Max Londonio, and Fernando Rocha’s release as a testament to the power of collective action and worker solidarity with grassroots community organizations, 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that MLK Labor will work with affiliates to support union members who are targeted and impacted by an unjust immigration system under Trump and other US politicians who put billionaires over workers; 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, MLK Labor commits to work with the Washington State Labor Council, including their Labor and Immigration Table, which, per Resolution 2025.22, is working in solidarity with immigrant rights groups to achieve the elimination of for-profit detention centers nationally, including the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, congruent with RCW 70.395.
