Resolution Calling on the City of Seattle to have an Exhibition during the 2026 World Cup, Highlighting the City’s Climate Leadership

WHEREAS, Environmental Sustainability is an important part of the City of Seattle’s and Washington State’s public “brand”. MLK Labor and the Washington State Labor Movement have played important leadership roles in ensuring that a future greener economy is more unionized.
WHEREAS, MLK Labor has advocated for multiple innovative policies that simultaneously advance the green transition and strengthen the Labor Movement including: the formation of the Green New Deal Oversight Board, Solar microgrid in Seattle Public Schools, making Seattle Parks community centers into climate resilience hubs, City support for low carbon concrete, City support for mechanical insulation inspections, strengthening the Seattle Energy Code, adopting Building Emissions Performance Standards, and the upcoming Climate Action Plan which will address climate adaptation, worker safety, and transportation electrification.
WHEREAS, the 2026 World Cup is an opportunity to strengthen Seattle’s sustainability brand and share its vision of a pro-worker climate transition with visitors from around the world. This will help good ideas spread so that we can all make the changes needed to tackle the climate crisis.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, MLK Labor Calls on The City of Seattle to have a physical exhibition space during the 2026 World Cup that tells the story about Seattle’s pro-union climate leadership, co-designed with MLK Labor and other community stakeholders.
