The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician 2


  • 40 hours per week
  • Day Shift

  • Provide Customer Service  | Exercise your customer service skills by responding promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone, written, intercom, and window reception inquiries from clients about test information.
  • Share Your Knowledge  | Impart your laboratory wisdom by teaching, training, and sharing practical knowledge with other staff responsible for entering and managing entry of medical necessity, results, and/or manual billing; work with leadership to review and update procedures, policies, and job aids.
  • Utilize Problem-Solving Skills  | Resolve problems in a timely, thorough and accurate manner and provide appropriate documentation for supervisor review.


  • An Associate Degree for a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology
  • Equivalent education/experience.


  • It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, including Harborview Medical Center and at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions, and also including an anticipated central lab location (Renton, WA) when scheduled.
  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.


  • Receive, inventory, log and organize clinical trials and other research specimens.
  • Prepare, organize and send sample collection kits to clinical study sites.
  • Process specimens according to appropriate protocol. Process complex research specimens specific to each individual study.
  • Process swabs, serum, plasma and other clinical trials/research samples.
  • Organize specimens for repository storage.
  • Perform components of laboratory testing, such as DNA extraction and PCR set up.
  • Operate and perform required maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain reagents, chemical solutions, according to established procedures.
  • Receive and unpack or prepare and ship biohazard/infectious materials in accordance with DOT and IATA regulations. Respond to any shipment problem report in a timely fashion. Inform supervisor and document response.
  • Pull or return samples from and to freezers in a timely manner and track freezer inventory and maintenance.
  • Provides support for special projects and performs related duties as assigned
  • Perform data processing of laboratory results; perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, recording and charting; prepare and/or send data for computer processing; perform filing related to storage of laboratory results with accuracy and legible records.
  • Monitors laboratory inventory in assigned work. Place orders as needed.
  • Assist in training new employees on routine testing, safety and laboratory protocols and guidelines.
  • Perform the work of a Clinical Laboratory Technician 1.
